Who I Am and Why I Started A Little Off Beat
Hi, my name is Brian and I started A Little Off Beat to help people learn how to become the musician they’ve always dreamed of becoming.
While talking to friends, family, and strangers over the last 10 years, I realized that so many people regret never picking up an instrument.
At first, it seemed silly to me. Just pick it up! You can start whenever you want, I thought.
Well it was easy for me to say.
You see, I’ve been playing music from before I can remember. It’s a second language to me, and so I rarely thought about the knowledge it took to play.
Once I started thinking like a beginner again and discussing it with people who had no prior knowledge of music, I finally got it.
Why It’s So Hard to Pick Up an Instrument
What I finally realized was that there is an overwhelming amount of knowledge that goes into learning music.
I had forgotten how hard I worked to get to where I am. I’ve spent tens of thousands of hours playing musical instruments over the course of almost 30 years
First, there are the basics of just handling your instrument. Since I’m focusing on the piano currently, think about it. Do you even know how to sit at one?
Next, what are the names of the notes? What scales do you know? Chords? Can you play with two hands? Can you play different rhythms? Can you read music?
The list goes on and on.
I officially apologize to all the people that I originally scoffed at for not doing something that I found so easy!
Why A Little Off Beat (ALOB) Can Help You
Why do I feel qualified to help you? Well first off, I have the musical experience over my life. I play piano, sing, play trumpet, drums, and more.
I have knowledge of a variety of different styles (classical, jazz, blues, latin, rock, pop, etc.), and I just truly love playing music.
But most importantly, I have put myself through the shoes of a beginner again so that I could remember what it was like.
From that, and from my background in learning new things (a hobby of mine), I developed a sense of what it would take to teach someone new how to play music.
So, I began developing the idea of this site and here I am. I will be continually adding more and more stuff to the site as time goes on.
Everything is here for you to help you learn how to play music like I’ve gotten to enjoy my whole life!
How ALOB Teaches You How to Play Piano
As I said, I am currently focusing on teaching piano. I believe that all instruments can follow the same overall methods I employ, however.
The biggest factor in learning how to play is information. More specifically, information overload.
When I talk to people about musical things they don’t know, I can see their physical frustration and I watch them cringe as they have NO idea what I’m talking about.
So at ALOB, we are going to remedy that for you.
The lessons I am developing are created through the eyes of a child. How would someone young learn? How did I learn?
The answer? Super basic lessons, which slowly build up over time. We add just a little bit of knowledge each day so that you never feel overwhelmed.
As long as you aren’t going out and trying to read more on your own, which I do NOT recommend for the reasons described above, you’ll find yourself playing in no time.
A Typical Scenario: How Adults Don’t Learn How to Play An Instrument
What I have seen from people who begin learning as adults is that they get REALLY excited to play. The passion and desire is there.
But they start learning things, and start to see what they DON’T know.
And that frustrates the hell out of them. They keep pushing and pushing to try to understand and play until they finally burn out.
And then they give up.
That part is the saddest, because now you have someone who truly had the desire to play just feel defeated and frustrated from something I find very wonderful.
Even worse, they put a lot of time and money into getting started, only to have it all wasted as they give up soon thereafter.
What You’ll Get Here at ALOB
So yeah, I’m not going to do that to you! I totally understand that. It happens when doing anything new. It’s a natural human desire to try their hardest at something.
The problem is, information is so freely available now that our brains haven’t been able to evolve to adapt to it. And so we cram as much as we can into them and overwhelm them.
Here at ALOB, you’ll get easy to follow lessons that don’t do this to you. You’ll also get a bunch more. Here is what I have so far:
